The #460 model is commonly known today as "Single ring".
Went on sale for the first time
on June 1906. Althought there are few razors dated on 1905 according to its serial number.
The "double ring" #460 model changes its design on 1905. The new redesigned #460 standard model has just a different neck design on the handle, with the only difference that now has only one ring. This was made to improve productivity, saving some time and money to the company. But this improvement was not noticed to the public on the adverts or catalogs.
On 1908 Gillette changes its corporate image, and designs the "diamond and arrow" trademark logo, including it on metal blade boxes, leather and metal cases and the back of the razors base plate. Gillette redesigns this year the blade boxes too, taking out for sale the new models on metal. But there are many razors from 1908 and after that do not have the diamond logo stamped on its back.
* We must notice that when a single ring model needs to be dated, it is only necessary to look at the serial number, or the engraved marks on the back of the comb base plate, although sometimes razors do not have serial number, and they are not necessary dated before 1905.
But sometimes it is not so easy to date a case, because the razor inside it has probably been replaced by a later model, so when dating a case we have to pay attention at the scripts, trademarks, ribbons, buttons, corners, colors of the satin lining, etc.
Many times, usually, the cardboard blade or metal boxes have been replaced too, by some later models. So this is a special thing to pay attention to.
THE CASES
Leather covered or metal. We found several kind of cases, first in leather covered wood, and in 1909 Gillette introduces the first metal case.
If we look at the shape, we can found "tapered" shape or "straight" corners shape cases (or just not tapered) .
We can find these combinations with the 460 Single ring model when talking about cases:
1. - Old type double ring leather case (using the spare stock of the double ring models), with slide clasp opening and slanted ribbon with the legends "GILLETTE SALES CO . TIMES BUILDING - TIMES SQUARE . NEW YORK.N.Y.", or "GILLETTE SAFETY RAZOR CO. BOSTON MASS, U.S.A.", or "GILLETTE SALES CO . CHICAGO, ILL". 1905 and 1906 (for single ring models).
2. -
Tapered shape case, black leather covered with "Gillette" script on the inside. All the inside of the case is covered with leather. 1906-1907
3. - Old type single ring case, with "not tapered" corners. The upper part inside the case is satin lined. The script or logo can change. 1907-1920
The old type double ring case is still being used on 1905 and 1906, for the first models of single ring.
The "tapered" shape case appears for first time on the adverts and catalogs from the middle of 1906 and 1907.
The not tapered corners single ring case (identical shape to the double ring case, but with button closing), appears for the first time on the adverts and catalogs from 1907.

ANAGRAMS, SCRIPTS AND TRADEMARKS (CASES)
The #460 Single ring sets can be found with three basic designs of scripts on the upper side inside the case:
1. - Slanted ribbon with the usual legends for the double ring model, indicating the place of production. 1905 to 1908.
2. - "Gillette" script logo with silver or gold letters over satin lined of varied colors, sometimes on leather. Between 1906 and 1908.
3. - Diamond Gillette logo, with some variations on the attached text. From 1908.
4.- Diamond Gillette logo, with "Made in USA" after years 1913-14.
5.- Diamond logo, with "Made in USA" and "OLD TYPE" text. This is for single ring editions
after introducing THE NEW type razors on 1921.
Colors for the diagonal textile band use to be dark blue, green, black, violet, purple, red.
Colors for the velvet lined use to be red, dark green, dark blue, violet, purple.
Legends that can be found on the slanted ribbon (in silver or gold letters) are:
-
"GILLETTE SALES CO . TIMES BUILDING - TIMES SQUARE . NEW YORK.N.Y.", use to have the same ornamental design.
- "Gillette Sales Co. Chicago, Ill.", even in lowercase or capital letters, in different ornamental designs or simple, and where "Ill" means Illinois.
Although different types could be found to those shown here.

ANAGRAMS, SCRIPTS AND TRADEMARKS (RAZORS)
On 1908 Gillette began to use the new "diamond and arrow" trademark logo in the new blades produced.
It is not sure if this logo was engraved on the base plate of the razors at this time, or this happened later.
Different marks can be found on the back of the head plate:
1. - Just a "G" inside a square. Used before and after 1908, not necessary only before the diamond logo.
2. - "Diamond and arrow" logo. Always after 1908.
3. -
"Diamond and arrow" logo with "KNOWN THE WORLD OVER". Always afeter 1908.
4. - "MADE IN U.S.A." use to be with the diamond logo. Probably used after 1914 (First World War).
5. - Nothing.
6. - "King C. Gillette" signature engraved (back of the base plate and the cap).

BLADE BOXES
Cardboard blade boxes use to be black coloured, and sometimes can be leather covered, others just paper covered, with several legends:
- "GILLETTE" with no ornamental design. Different paper colours, black, beige, violet or leather brown.
- "DULL" and "SHARP" with ornamental design.
- "Gillette" diamond and arrow logo engraved in an ivory case (just early Aristocrats)
At the begining the legend on the cardboard blade boxes is "sharp" and "dull", but in some adverts between 1908 and 1919 has been found the legend "Gillette" on both boxes, with the same ornamental pattern as 1906 ones, or just the "Gillette" name without ornamental lines.
This can be a really good trick to date a set if it is found with its original blade cases.
METAL BLADE BOXES
We can find some changes on the design of the metal blade boxes.
Since 1909 (that is the year that Gillette begins to include them on the sets) the blade boxes have some ornaments. On the top we can read "GILLETTES BLADES", the diamond logo appears on the sides, and on the bottom there is an engraving with straight lines. On the sides of the upper part there is a cleft for securing the box closure, that mathc with the lower part.
The first catalog where we can find some differences on these boxes is on the 1916 US service set catalog, when all the previous ornaments have disappeared, including the cleft closure. Maybe it can be found the diamond logo on the bottom and top of the box.
There is a lapse of time between 1914 and 1916 that we are not sure because we have not found any advertising or catalog to check the cases.
SERIAL NUMBERS
On the middle of 1906 the company changed the style of the handle, and this was the beggining of the "single ring" handle.
1907 serial numbers from 770.425 to 999.999. Then started the A series, with A1, to A195.424 this year.
1908 serial numbers from A195.425 to A675.857
1909 serial numbers from A675.858 to A999.999, and from B1 to B222.220
1910 serial numers from B222.221 to B697.600
1911 B697.601 to B999.999, and C1 to C80.508
1912 C80.509 to C260.238
1913 C260.239 to C407.806
1914 C407.807 to C578.360
1915 C578.361 to C911.086

1917 D516.475 to D999.999, and E1 to E449.207. Many Gillette razors were sold on military sets.
1918 Millions of razors sold, brought by goverment contracts. Numers from E449.208 to J7.344. Letters E, F, G, H, J.
"J" series -> This number was used only for government of US, for the army. Many razors were produced, and to avoid wasting letters, each 100 razors were numbered with the same number. This razors are marked with "Property of U.S. Army". For example, there were 100 razors with J1, 100 razors with J2, and so...
But the razors of the US Army were not only marked with this, sometimes do not have the US legend, or have another letter.
On this war period, about 800.000 razors were made for wordlwide sales distribution, with letters E, F, G, H.
1919 For J series from J7.345 to J999.999 (probably), probably not were used all of this numbers. K1 to K927.216.
Many military sets were sold on civilian market, because when war ends, the government and the company had many razors without owner.
1920 K927.217 to K999.999, M1 to M999.999, N1 to N459.887
1921 N459.888 to N999.999, and P1 to P679.777.
