Rocket LD aniversary
Rocket HD 750 (France)

We can talk about a variety of Gillette "Rocket" models. Now we will focus on the british "Rocket" family.

The designation of the name of these models it has never been clear, because Gillette used a different name in each advert. Actually, the only clear name has always been "one-piece" razor. But over the years, the names used in each advertisements has been making a clearer footprint in order to establish a designation for collection purposes.
There are some adverts where we can found the "Superspeed" designation, and in some of them we can find the name "Rocket".
Sometimes the plastic case had this name on the top of it. On the year 1953, an advert of the "Illustrated" magazine showed the models #58 and #59 designed as "Superspeed razor sets", and the model #59 was specially designed as "The Rocket razor set".

In USA there are some Rocket models (the American Super Speed family), like in Mexico and Brazil, but they are different of the Rocket England models. They have identical head and doors, but with a different variety of handles, lightly more slim than british ones. USA superspeed models (flare tip superspeeds) have their twin brothers on England, and we will talk about them at the end of this article.

Basically there is an universal handle for the whole british Rocket family, with a thickness of 11 mm and a length of 76 mm.
The knurled diamond motif is the texture used on all of these models.

We could add to the British Rocket family some other models that have very similar design and some identical pieces.
It would be the models #58 (with different texture on the handle), and maybe the Aristocrat "junior" England (with a slimmer handle).
But with will talk about those models in another article.

- THE "#58" -

There is a special model that should be added to the Rocket family.
Sometimes this model is called "aristocrat" between the collectors, but it is not correct. It is just the #58.

It was launched on 1953, as a tribute to the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II on June the 2th.
The "Picture Post" and the "Punch" magazines released a special issue on June of this year, in which an advertisement of the three "Coronation sets" could be seen, with the models #45, #58 and #66.
On this advert, the model #58 was desined as number 58 set, with a "one-piece" razor with silver finish, and the red leatherette case showed on the top the drawing of a silver crown. All of the three set cases had the logo of a silver crown.
But this crown was only used for the models of that year (1953). Then the future models of these sets would not show the crown logo on the top of the case.

The head of this model is exactly the same as the Rocket HD 500, same silo doors, same base plate and same draft and center bar.
The texture of the handle is very different of the other rocket models, because now we can find longitudinal grooves along the handle, with oblique indents that give it the anti-slip characteristic. On the final part of the handle, the knob has the 3 typical bands like the Rocket HD 500.
